I'm Chris Miller WWL. First news Tuesday total into the WLA and met them in dot com. Nine minutes after 5 AM at the early edition of WWL first news on this first of march 2017. Wednesday. The Ash Wednesday at just any Wednesday it is indeed Ash Wednesday as we wake up to mark McGraw is over. He got to be one of my favorite things of the carnival season last night. Pan early this morning to bring you look at it right at the stroke movement and it got to watch the police shut down Bourbon Street. Announced that Mardi Gras is over. There I always enjoyed going to. May. Need. Dichotomy of reaction that we see from people some of the revelers. See this ceremony as indication that you know what. It's time to call a night it's time to stop partying for a day after day after day is time to go get some rest. In others like known Noah and over you may say it's over. But it's not over we're gonna keep this party go and I'd say usually about half. Of the tens of thousands of people on Bourbon Street at midnight Tuesday at that point. On all problem back to vote fell on him to sleep. But the rest is kind of out of the way is the police come down the street in cars on horseback on foot and then once the cops are done with a little. Display they go right back to party. As they were prior cute that it died quote unquote shut down or. If you have enough Marty Gartner us. I. I have yes cited it's it's over I accept. It. Yeah day and that's where I see it is that IE enjoy it as much as I possibly can't. And it and at the point that it's time for it to be over it's like okay is that this is right this is good it's it was just the right amount of fix excitement. And enjoyment and now we turn the page. And move on overall I think you really was. A book for me personally and overall for the city. An unbelievably. Amazing Mardi Gras you add in the fact that there were two. Huge weekends for the hospitality industry with. Nearly every. Hotel filled restaurants and bars during gang buster business as a result of having the NBA all star game coupled with the first weekend. And then this weekend was just unbelievable with the best whether I can ever remember for Mardi Gras. We have the threat of rain. On Monday grub but I never saw a drop of it the only rain we saw was on the first Friday. And so overall I think it was really a nice Marty did you enjoy your carnival and it went well. He's a man of few words. Chris Miller let me ask you this. The mayor last night I've talked to him just before you hop up on a course. And wrote down Berber and street. And we were talking about the drunken driver who mowed down the crowd at the end Damien parade route. And ultimately he says while they are considering. Some changes some improvements to safety. He says the responsibility for this falls upon the man who shows. To drink too crazy excess and they get behind the wheel of the car. He says go look it if they need to closed roads earlier or keep traffic further from the parade route. But he really laid the blame. At the feet of the drunk driver and you know I've heard from people more reaction than anything else's while I can't believe this is never happened before. With people getting so drunk and having so much. To drink a long parade routes and during Mardi Gras that this is never happened before Tuesday how could this be the first time this has happened. And I guess the truth of the matter is that people have been generally more responsible and the fact that. They've never had to consider should we allow traffic near the parade route up until they absolutely have to close it for parades. Do you think something hats to be done at this point does there have to be. Some analysis and an evaluation of if they need to change the way they do control traffic near parades as a result of this incident. I'm sure they probably will take a look at it did not sure how much more you can do seek and push it further back a block but. As pretty. You've thick crowds of people. Don't even as you get blocks away especially if the Braves just finish their people are walking. Back to wherever they came from. Near or about to started walking to the for an I think you make a good point. That no matter how I mean you have to push it so much further back in one of the most frustrating things about the carnival season is the traffic. That in that. The traffic mess that ensues not only before operate. But when they're moving the floats when people are setting up all better ladders and chairs and tables. When police are getting into place often you wonder why they have the road closed already or why did they have to move those floats that way or wide of the and I think drivers get very frustrated already with the traffic problems if you start talking about. Closing off more roads. Further from the parade route early year and keeping them closed leader. I get the concern. But it. This has never happened before and I guess you am I mart might be more inclined to roll the dice and if it's only happened once. I don't like you need jerk reactions I don't know what's it went all all of a sudden you wanna change things because of one of it. And the city's got to stay open to some extent. And considering and the history of motorized vehicles of Mardi Gras. This doesn't happen. Often. So care. And again and then in the same breath I do agree with the many people with that I can't believe this has never happened before. So we will ask our audience to call us that Bible for two to fill light that the and text does that 877. And let us know how do you feel. About the traffic situation around the parades as a result of a drunken driver mowed down a crowd. At the and Damian parade route should there be changes and improvements war. Would there is not be improvements would actually make. Things worse thank you Chris we'll talk here in about fifteen minutes of more first news here on WW well. AM at them and back now I'm Dave Cohen live at suburban or leans hotel. Which is our Mardi Gras headquarters and I guess that are Ash Wednesday headquarters with Marty draw. Being over or what text messages right now it's 7870. I mean I feel but we're talking about the comments that New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu had last night when I was talking to a member country. Before it climbed up on his horse and rode down the street to close down the Mardi Gras celebration. We asked him about if any changes will be made. Choose the procedure for controlling traffic around the parade route in light of the drunken driver who crashed into the crowd. At dean Damien parade this year here's with the mayor had to sit. We look at everything get just get better every time fight accident when it never happened residency was open. Owes its individual didn't make a horrible decision to drink. And ten minute drive especially around that many people and especially that inebriated so that's where the responsibility lies. 25 year old Nielsen resumed it's facing twelve new counts. A vehicular negligent injury and ten counts of first degree vehicular. Negligent injuring he faces over a hundred years in jail potentially. After he was said to have had a blood alcohol content of point two. 32. That is folks. Nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol your thoughts and text messages and 87870. Coming up right now let's take a look at your forecast on this that Wednesday. Wanna toss it brought the car today for running around with have mostly cloudy skies breezy and warm with a 30% chance of spotty showers and thunderstorms. And some other storms could be strong during the evening hours with near record high ranked 81. Now have a 30% chance of showers and storms during the evening as the cold farmers do it overnight partly cloudy windy and cooler with flows north of the lake in the ground 51 degrees in south of lake land 56. On Thursday looking pretty nice out there are partly cloudy breezy but much cooler with a high around 66 and Friday mostly sunny breezy and cold with highs in the mid sixties. For the pinpoint forecast center and WW LTV meteorologist Dave Knauss bomb. Thank you day one person. To date 77 he says it's on the individual. The person who makes the choice to drink to excess. No changes are needed a along the parade routes but some south Texas and says it's easy to fix the problem of people being hit by drunk drivers. Barricade parade route one block. From the route. Do you think that's necessary to think they need to set up barricades block away from all parade route and not late cars within a block. Man can you imagine the traffic nightmares that that would create on top. Of the traffic nightmares that already exists surrounding parades and is it necessary or is it overkill. Is this an isolated problem or one you think we're going to be seeing more. What they call the 5042601870. And more text message Tuesday 7070 coming up after sports you're on WWL. And for that passed out at suburban Orleans hotel all the rest of the guys are at the studios on port street. I'm walking into my microphone McCain is that mark and are doing sports this morning hi Dave did this. All right Steve Geller still taken a little time off mark Menard is here with sports forums on this that way don't Kmart. Don't worry Steve will be back tomorrow so you just got one are you worried I wouldn't tech couldn't see through my microphone through with the well let's get right to a third ranked LSU baseball found themselves in at 20 hole midway through their Mardi Gras night matchup with Nichols the tigers would not be deterred. LSU managed to score one run in each of the fifth. Sixth and seventh innings to come from behind and knocked off the colonel's. 32 now 81 the tigers prepare for a trio of big twelve opponent this weekend in Houston starting Friday night when it is TCU. After few days off to regroup the pelicans are back in action tonight. Still looking for their first win since acquiring center DeMarcus Cousins and needs good job and gentry takes the best path towards victory involves point guard Jrue Holiday putting the ball in the basket. He's has become come. Mobile facilitate. And we don't want him to be what we were ordered to be as a facilitator but we wanted to be a score that's what drew is. Gentry said Holliday has been playing a little too unselfishly. I think what he's he's such a team guy. And he's all about trying to do the right things that I think she's taken away some of his aggressiveness to try to. Just make sure that those guys would get the ball and those guys the plan and I told him what we need from him or for him to be true. Pelicans host Detroit Pistons in this movie can senator tonight at seven. And LSU basketball engages in their final home game of the season tonight hoping to break their record fifteen game losing streak. The tigers those Tennessee Volunteers we'll have that matchup for you on WWL six. They'll sports talk for Bobby Hebert and Deke Bellavia Deuce McAllister. Reviews it disappoints start for the pelicans new look lineup and previews this weekend's NFL com line at 530 we'll join the LSU Sports Radio network for tiger basketball. Against Tennessee public for the pros at for on WW well I'm mark and are we early morning sports headlines. Mark when part of our downtown studio is Dave Cohen here at suburban Orleans hotel where I. Am recovering from a wonder for Mardi Gras how was your carnival season mark. I had a great time. Havel a one year old who got to experience its first raid on Sunday and so that we went to the quarter. On Tuesday and didn't bring the kid to the quarter though is as I was gonna say it weren't a one year old and go to order now just just my wife and myself hello with with some friends not a bit general Qaeda might be okay with that but definitely an upper. I'll a lot of our time on royal with a friend that has a place on royal that Leo was too. If the privilege to go hang out at a on the Marty gras day and so that's that's usually where we head on on that Tuesday. And then like that we took in toast and so on Sunday and and kid had a great time. Fantastic honorees on. And how you experience it as they. Adult without any kids and and I always find it interesting to see how parents. I just Marty gras celebration look like you've balanced it well thank you mark we'll talk to you. In about 25 minutes to more sports I'm gonna get your prediction on at that time. Will either the pelicans or LSU men's use something that neither is very good at this season win. When they take to the hard court we'll get marks predictions coming up in about point five minutes here on WW well let's take a look at your forecast on this that Wednesday. Details he put it clouds out there and be breezy and unseasonably warm with a 30% chance of spotty showers and thunderstorms. And some of the storms could be strong as we headed to the evening hours with a new record high around 81 the record is 83. Now during this evening we'll see a call for a living they're giving us at 30% chance for showers and storms. An overnight to be partly cloudy windy and much colder out there those on the torso and lower fifties in the South Shore in the mid fifties. On Thursday the for a nice they were partly cloudy skies he previewed a much cooler with highs only around 66. And Friday mostly sunny breezy and cool with highs in the mid sixties. But the pinpoint forecast center on WW LTV meteorologist Dave Nussbaum. Thank you Dave more of that crazy heat that we had on the warmest said Tuesday that most people can remember AJ thanks for calling you're on WW LU think changes need to be made to parades safety. After a driver I'd drunken driver according to cops mowed down about folks at the condemning it. Parade. To show the more days. Did manage those improvements that can. I don't think you can ever be totally. Eliminated. Where it is not a chance that something like that. Ought to happen. Okay so what changes should I made. And what is really pretty isolated incidents I can't remember this ever happening before. It's bad cop Dave. And I'm not needed it each and outward. Along time ago. I was a program pin. And publish. What parents. And my Brothers. That was kidnapped and university. And it was so far that cross from the opposite side. Canal street and Andy hit several people. And it's so early Japanese. It's no wonder. Well all right not I think America I said it's never happened before all right so it hasn't happened didn't he believe what fifty years. Still isolated I would say thanks for college it. It's the too early edition for the day after party girl. He if it is Ash Wednesday. You know it's funny say that because someone texted me at 87870. About half an hour ago right when we started the program. And they said quote. You sound really bad. And then they texted right after that one minute later saying in fact you both sound really bad. Otto. NFC championship game. Well you know us hollering you've got what three kids hollering and screaming to help them get. Throws accurate take a lot of your voice you know actually says hollering and screaming at them to get back on over. And Ronald. Well I'm glad that at least you Lori proactive parent that says that I am a band chaperone. And I can tell you it's so frustrating a parade. When parents don't pass indicated the backup before the ban them and then wanna get upset when one of the kids take the drumstick today ahead. Or to put clips them or the trombone. Slide catches a break between the guys they wanna get mad at the band. I think one thing to back your kids that you know the band takes the entire street. You know they go from the line to line so thank you chorus for being proactive parent an ambulance taking you out of the street for mr. Davis to Shelby out of the way. They'll I don't show my duke politely. And I do with a smile and usually I don't know about. Usually I do with the hey give the kid height 51 because then they're happy at that he can you move over a little bit for us. But yet it's very frustrating in this room constantly. Moved the crowd back but you don't they are gonna take. Drumstick or an instrument today head and that that cool. So we're trying to protect everybody and keep everything happy to thank you for taking them tangent we're talking about the mayor's comment that talked to him last night. And I asked him about the drunken driver. The alleged drunken driver that mowed down a crowd of people and Demi and and Aniston are they looking at changing parades they've Pia as a result we'll hear what he had. We look at everything get just get better every time by accident when it never happened whether this team was open. It's an individual can make a horrible decision to drink. And and then a drive especially around that many people and especially that inebriated and that's whether responsibility lies. And most of the people sexing up to date 7870 seemed to agree they believe that throwing the book at this drunk driver will send a message to others and help prevent it from happening in the future. I can never remember anything like this happening we did have a caller AJ is that about fifty years ago. It happened once before. A lot of people a Texas thing they're surprised it never. Happened before or not offer an and that it doesn't happen more but the question is should they indeed back up. The street closures earlier before parade and come further route. And I said that I don't know that may be in need jerk reaction I hate it when we see officials over react to an isolated incidents and do things that impact it with someone else affected me at 877 the and said quote. I'd rather see people adjust to traffic and adjust to losing a loved one. Guess you need to lose a loved one. To adjust your outlook and look at the big picture but had to go immediately to the scolding us. Yeah and I'm not a I'm not belittling the law and then nobody died for the I mean you or very badly injured and I get that but I'm and I'm not. Discounting. That. I'm just saying sometimes we overreact to things like this and make changes and adjustments that are on necessary. Frequently. Officials. Change things based on one incident. And it just it's it's it's overkill it needs it. Over abundant it's not needed though. He Texan estimate 7870. And let us now as far as this USA today report Chris that Louisiana is the worst state in the nation. Whoever did that ranking clearly was not hear from mark. Was not here for carnival is not understand. How much people low life in the weeds you know how much they love. Their families and their friends. And there fund and their food and their celebrations. I don't think that would do that with a category their did you see that in the in the lifting in the rankings did not. Now I get there were reports state I get it because were report states we have problems with education we have problems with Klein we have problems. That go down the list and they are problems and they do need to be addressed health care the list goes on. But. I ate and I can say this now having lived in Louisiana over twenty years. After coming from up north I am a Damn Yankees that it was three Yankee and a game yankees in Yankee visits and goes home a game Yankee days and call this well. I am a damn Yankee. And it took me a little while to get it but now I get it. Across Louisiana by and large people prioritize family and fun. Overworking their butts off constantly. To make more money and to improve their financial situation and and that's not a rule for everybody but he is it something that the rest of the nation doesn't understand they see Louisiana's four and lazy. And they spent all their time working and running the rat race and rarely get to spend time enjoying life and spending time with friends and family. And I don't know who's richer and whose poor if you're basing it on how much money they have in their bank accounts and make Louisiana was. If you're basing it on how much love and fun they have. I think the rest of the nations. And I don't think people get it if not for a. No no clearly not. You're judging by the timing of this being published now you viscerally were here in the last couple weeks. Now that should have been we need to invite all those folks who wrote this article and did these rankings. Come down and have some fun with and then tell us that they still think we're the worst. State in the nation thank you Chris we'll talk to you in less than when he met with more first news here on WWL. IM FM and dot count. If that they've. But Nikolay live and direct to WW LTV and point forecasts that are. It's a good morning mr. meteorology. Good morning guys doing. I'm a little tired a little war now. You know you say that we're supposed to thank you for the good weather enough blame me for the bad weather on much or how much and I would thing at least at that cold at least at that rainy but. I really think I lost about eight pounds of black yesterday. Was that officially the warmest February 28 and whether it was the warmest bat Tuesday ever. No no wasn't really got to a high of 79 degrees yesterday did feel a lot warmer than that I'm sure downtown with little warmer as well. So they warmest Marty go on record as eighty threes set back in 1970s. That we did not yet that the record for years I don't remember. That on. That that but I gotta tell you I walk the entire Metairie parade route from start to finish and it felt like he was ninety's you're good enough. With that bright sunshine anyway humid. And I really have a I was stoked. Sweat which and I guess that rather that than being soaked from rain like we were two of the last three years that bank and call time. You know you look at that cold wet ones. The it was well let it get to the warmest but nonetheless it was still pretty warm I mean everyone was so happy that what shivering in huddled against the last couple years. But that's like you know after the all not a bad Mardi Gras. Now today for Ash Wednesday another very won't went out their record time temperature of 81 degrees a record 83 don't think we'll get to the record that within a couple degrees. Now a corporate gonna move through this evening at that can spark off some showers and thunderstorms later on. Looks like between say five and six for the North Shore meet 27 and eight you're on the sound source when it starts moving again. Likely to ciskei Linus and showers a couple of thunderstorms moving on in now some of the storms north of lake could be a strong so some gusty winds. Maybe some small hail today downpours by the time it gets here at the front week in an alliance in weekend and just some quick the downpour maybe some gusty winds that passes by. Beta one election that. We do need to score lower today. And you're out roll out a way bro in the stationed there but yeah I'm a suburban Orleans hotel and I didn't bring that your work with Mick and but what's he wins today you're wearing aren't. It. He blew me. Ward sure yeah. Wore it short fields. Huge it's. Huge group and we're here. All right our photos to show those master control. He was out of it here I was gonna recreate this hurdler which by the way I recorded many years ago and it kind of sounded Bentley. If the but yeah winds are fifteen to twenty today. And tonight to run 1525 or sesame pretty breezy out there to keep that in mind much cooler weather. Women be Warren hang on hang on don't be warned if you Wear racecar during Tutu like SO summit yesterday. Or the guys who were killed. That the wind is going to be strong enough today to blow that skirt kill to do up over your waist and show everything underneath. And guys to be alert. And women to guys killed that someone wearing that clothing may have a blowup over there waste that's the explanation of this hurdler a public service from WW. I annoyed that the so there is a while the wind the front of their denied so while we're in the eighties today will be its sixties on Thursday and Friday of plenty of sunshine and those will be back in the forties. North the instant thirty showing up in fiftieth in the South Shore. We get them and Alec too bad Saturday partly cloudy and 68 slight chance for rain on Sunday 74 degrees so. In neutral court the next couple days kind of back to reality weather wise here itself with it. I've been a little while giving it skinny line of showers which makes sense its rarity had Fat Tuesday exit and now we turn stuff yeah so you know perfect time for that. That mr. that your relatives Dave knows bomb liven direct from the pinpoint forecast and I was gonna do what is wrong with people story with you but. Instead I wanna ask you about this ranking from the USA today. That Louisiana is the worst state in the nation I claimed that Damn Yankees which you are I am to is welcome you know with someone who comes down in days. From the north and that it is visiting and going home we decide to call this so you think Louisiana's the worst place in the nation that we do. I don't think so I mean I've visited plenty of places around the country. This is by far no word here the worst. Sure we have for issues that every city dies. You know. I don't understand why that is means is that the key separate early in the family traditions the coming together you know put it worked on hold to do all this. You know whether it's more Dick artists Crawford spoilers you know we've tail gating you know I mean. And I don't see how that's adults now that is ended in the read articles he with the staff swerve but you know. Right yeah they didn't measure communities it and measure low they can measure celebration that in measure passion and I guess those things are hard to measure but. And someone had to be number fifty but I guess maybe we can Wear with a kind of badge of honor because they don't get us here. That they really don't mean as both of us northerners my perspective of Louisiana coming you know from up there was totally different kind of like the review water boy type thing. And of course that's not at all equal if it is so. Quote from one Damn Yankees do another I'm glad you're here with love this worst state in the nation on USA today. Thank you Dave I was out there on Bourbon Street last night at midnight when they brought the Mardi Gras party do an end. Our. Back on oil moves down burden created told the revelers it was time to go home. Some homeless and and went home and really after it's not required but law and the others kept the party going strong in fact few minutes ago on on Bourbon Street there is still plenty of people still partying hard all week. Here on this Ash Wednesday morning usually what I've seen the last few days they stay here at suburban Arlington now. He's about this time or maybe in the next few minutes when it's them might start peeking over the horizon that's what a lot of the last few revelers hundreds of people still going that it. Realized oh wait a minute daylight. Need sleep I need sports right now once WWL. So McCall and mark and good morning mark. Good morning Dave LSU baseball came from behind at the box last night turning it 20 deficit. Into a 32 victory over the Nichols curls now Eaton won the third ranked tigers next head to Houston to face a trio of big twelve teams that Reliant Stadium. All sorts Friday night when they battle TCU. The sequel released beleaguered safety Gerris bird before the start of the league year march 9. The thirty year old Byrd was heading into the fourth year of a six year deal. The team will see eight million dollars of debt money at their books thanks to the move but it will relieve 3.2 million dollar of cap space. The health of the got a ton of office and Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins the last three games but the rest of the roster has been nearly frigid. Which Alvin Gentry says bogey and the brow beat their teammates to contribute. One of the things is gonna happen eventually is that we don't have to have got stuff of my career. Some of the shots that to open up into. Gentry said Davis and cousins are dealing with the offenders clogging the lane when no one can provide expert on the outside. I think they have collapsed programs. And those guys are still vivid. Who scored reports it. Good good shots in the process. Gentry says though that the that production is not sustainable without help. It will be especially important tonight with cousins suspended one game it is due to his accumulation of technical fouls the falcons host the Detroit Pistons in this movie king center tonight at seven. And LSU basketball engages in their final home game of the season tonight. Hoping to break their fifteen game record losing streak the tigers host the Tennessee Volunteers and we'll have that matchup for you on WW LS it's PM. They'll sports talk Bobby Hebert and Deke Bellavia Deuce McAllister reviews the disappointing start for the pelicans new lineup. And for previews this weekend's NFL com mind at 530. We'll join the LSU Sports Radio network for tiger basketball against Tennessee hello but the pros at for on WW well I'm mark and armed early morning sports headlines. I think a lot of people are saying thank god this is the LSU basketball final home game of the season because they're really tired of seeing them lose and continue extend that record losing streak. For tiger's group's any chance Phyllis you wins tonight. I don't think so let it Tennessee's. Of a pretty decent basketball's about basketball team and anytime they've run up against even decent basketball team that hasn't worked out well I think that the streak extends a sixteen and then now have to try to break it. And the final game of the year this weekend. All right and the pelican did you think the market cousins is fitting out tonight. Yes he he has gotten too many technical files and now he's a very enforced won only won one game suspension by the NBA is so he'll be out tonight. What has he had anything he came here to new world of any any technical while yet he had won and that's what pushed him over the edge. Europe and in the most recent game he had seventeen when he came in. So he got his life to that Padilla he got his eighteenth the other night and that's that's that's two men. Old habits die hard well thanks for tipping it over the edge. Boogie once he came to New Orleans you can control it just long enough tonight and I guess if there's any game to sit out this one anyway the pelicans when this one without doesn't. Yeah I think so Detroit it is is currently the eighth seed in the east they're 2931. It's it's a team that they should be able to beat. And especially get him at home so I think the pelicans do get a win tonight. All right mark Menard you grew up here in Louisiana. I'm like myself and USA today just rank this the worst state in the nation to live. You chose to stay here start a family here you just talked about your one year old left them reject it view do you think that folks who aren't from Louisiana. My body and large present company excluded. Don't understand our lifestyle don't understand how much we love life we love our families we love mark on it and we give up all the things to have that fun. And they rang just as being the worst state in the nation they just don't get us. I mean that could be a little bit of a part of it I know that we still ranked pretty low and education and other things that could that can be contributing factors as well but. But yeah I I think that the people that I know that look that live here that the the acquaintances and friends I've made over the years. I think they'll love it here and and so yet that I'm sure there is a little bit of a sacrifice it comes into it and it comes into living down here that people are willing to accept. Thank you mark all right I want to thank everyone for texting me at 87870. Telling me that you think many other places are out worked them in Louisiana. I'm not gonna put down any other specific. States or cities. But USA today that Louisiana's the worst state in the nation and I think that's utterly ridiculous but I understand why they do it. We make sacrifices to enjoy the lifestyle that we love on the fish in the family the friends the food to drink the celebrations the party's. And does that mean we make less money and were report states absolutely but they most of us are willing to accept that have a great that's Wednesday folks from the urban Orleans and now.
